Evaluation

I have learnt a lot from this course so far. I have found out about pinhole photography which is a great way to understand exposure times and aperture sizes.

If i could go back again and start i would change the way that i researched my work, i would look into more depth of photographers and styles.
I would take more of my own work and evaluate next to artist's.

I enjoyed the pinhole work and have gone on to create more work still. i also have enjoyed the work as a whole, especially using the 5x4 camera's which was good to set up and take about half an hour just to create one image.

Week 11:

This is the final week before christmas holidays, well christmas with a load of work.

The 5x4 picture we took had to be scanned in and printed out onto A3 photo paper then put up in the gallery.

The idea behind the picture was to create something that was aesthetically pleasing for ourselves and the viewer's.
We came up with the idea of a laser pen which was green, to make the image look good we thought about using mirrors to bounce the laser off, we took mirrors and then glasses as well to let the laser travel through and create this very cool black and green image.

I think that the image looks very rich. very clean and it works really well with the long exposure giving the laser change to blur and burn onto the sensor.

I looked further into Jerry Balloch work, he also takes other images like this one below. the 5x4 images are still used in magazines like Vogue and Aperture which is really big and hard to get into.

His work has an elegance and grace about it, its all pure and i like it very much.
He uses rich colours and lighting to create his work.

Week 10:

This week started off by getting into a group of 5 and having our studio induction with the equipment, lighting etc, we then all were signed off.
We were then shown the 5x4 cameras, and shown how to set them up on the big tripods.

Jerry Balloch, his work is dark, he uses lowe key images with a high key subject which gave me idea's for a dark background, with light and reflections.

Anthony Downey. a photographer who sets up pieces for advertising, and recently made a piece of work with washing powders for Aperture magazine.
Click to view web-exclusive: Anthony Downey on the June 2009 Green Revolution in Iran.

The group i was with collected lots of bottles and mirrors with a laser pen, we had minimal light from the soft box because of the laser giving off light.

  • The camera had to be adjusted for focus and framing.
  • The lighting had to have a light meter reading.
  • The aperture and shutter set.
  • The film into the dark sleeve.
  • The shutter was released.
  • We then developed the film in the colour machine.

The idea was to capture a picture with inspiration from Jerry, the picture had to be dark but high key on the subject.
The picture was taken on F11, aperture f4 and then shutter speed at 1 second on a shutter release cable.
This slow shutter enabled the green laser to slight blur and light up the glasses which looks very detailed and really well done.

Week 9:

Week 9, Time and the Image.
The image had to be taken and then printed onto A3 and then hung in the studio.

For my project i wasnt able to find a specific photographer to look at and get ideas, but i had an idea as soon as the project Time and the Image was given.
I new that i was going to do something with movement and motion, i have taken images before at night, so i needed to incorporate the city in there somewhere.

I feel motion is time, capturing time at night works really well, it gives you a sense of absence as no figures are frozen.

The image above, I found on the interent by a photographer called James Ronalds. I was interested in the colours and the way it looked so i went out and started taking images.
The picture below taken by me is the one i chose out of 4 others.

My image i wanted to show the city at night, it shows the activity and the movement within just 8 seconds of exposure time.
You can see the buildings lit up, which show's people working and the traffic on the floor of the City leaving light trails. I wanted a good aesthetic sense to the image, which it has captured with the bright blue sky and the golden colours in the foreground.
But also the feeling of urgency and a busy, busy scene. there is a lot going on in the image.

    Week 8:

Week 8 we started to continue with our artist's piece.
Once the work had been researched and processed onto the template, the writing was then put onto the template also and then printed off onto an A3 sheet of gloss photo paper.

All of the peices of work that the group had created were placed in the studio all the correct 30cm distance apart and level. The group were called back at the end of the week to talk and critic each others idea's and work to develop and make them better.

The images was taken in Morocco with a Canon 5d mkii, Which is suprising on why it wasnt taken on a Canon 1D mk 4 or a large format camera because of the size of the prints, being from 20x 36 inch up to 40x 58 inch print.
The image was used with a tripod so maximum focus was acheived, as the image was blown up to a big size, motion blur is a major factor and is made visible.
The subjects are Moroccan's, female or male i am not sure of, but they are definitely hidden well.

    Week 7:

Week 7, taking an image and explaining with: Image, Process and Context of work.

I was then given the task to find out and explain some of the work by this photographer.
I chose the image by Maroc Hassan Hajjaj - spring summer collection 2018.

Above is an image of some of his other fashion work. His fashion is the attraction because the way he puts the outfits on People who would not be allowed to wear it in public.

                       Maroc Hassan Hajjaj
            Spring Summer collection 2018

I chose the picture because i think that the artist was trying to show his idea's, a new era of fashion.
He has captured a sense of isolation, the people, are they men and woman ? I think that the person doesn't matter, its all about his fashion against the style of Moroccan's.

The image was taken on a Canon EOS 5D mkii. Hajjaj takes most of his images on the top of the range high quality cameras. he has taken a series of images to promote Nike and sports gear etc.
The picture above is the only one that is not showing any sports wear, but to show off the summer collection in 2018.

Hassan takes images with sport outfits, i really like his work because of the fashion and the idea's involved.

    Week 6:

Me, along with roughly 20 other people from our class wen on a trip to Paris, from sunday morning until friday night.

    Eiffel Tower.
    Eugene Atget
    I looked at Eugene Atget.
He captured the old Paris, the image, to me shows poverty, no one is out, tranquility and depth of the streets and buildings themselves.

    My image

    Eugene Atget

I looked at Atget's picture of Notre Dame and recreated at night in colour, to see how much had changed in the foreground and background. as you can see not a lot.

    • We left sunday morning from uni.
    • Day 2 i went to the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame.
    Notre Dame.

    • Day three the whole group went to the Catacombs.
    • The Catacombs is a place which is all under ground, because of the fact that people were not allowed to be in a morgue above the surface, so they made a morgue under ground and put all dead people there, the place takes roughly 30 mins to an hour to walk through and most of the walls are 15 feet deep!.
    Catacombs.

    • Day four the whole group went to Paris photo, which really was a great experience seeing all different photographers work displayed in front of us.
    Photoquai Branly museum.

                 Maroc Hassan Hajjaj
                             Spring Summer collection 2018
    • We had to choose an image from this river side exhibition that we liked.
    • I chose this image because of the style and the layout.
    • Day five the group set off home.

    Week 5:

In our groups we watched the film Donnie Darko, it was to show us about photography and directing photographs. the film uses different parts of photography and movie.

The film plays on emotions well and creates a scene that gives off different feelings.
When the song mad world is played, there are sad scenes that interlock each other, and it displays people all in different photographic ways.

The chapters in the film devide it up into more like a book. I think this is to show that life has chapters, and you never know what to expect or what is going to happen.

The lyrics and text to the song had a big part to the scene shot. mad world was the song by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews, which is a slower cover.

The film starts to be seperated as the grids appear over the shots, then grids amongst grids. The use of repetition of the skull and then death. There are drawings of a skul of a rabbit then the appearance of the skull in a mans room whilst he is crying, Donie draws the same skull through the film.

I feel that the images represent death in different ways, the skull and an eye are pictured in the film. There are also fireworks at the end, maybe to show the celebration of life.

    Week 4:

We started off the week by sharing our blog's so far to the group. The class discussed and gave input to each individual blog.

    • I have to change my font.
    • i need to write name of artist beneath each piece.
    • set out my work clearer.
After the blog we moved on to the digital suite and sorted out our scanned images that we had done the week before.
we were shown how to give an image that we are going to print, the best quality.

    • Open up an images, the colours are not always the correct colours or exposure.
Theses images i created today in the digital suite using the scanners and a hight quality printer.

i have chosen to place the images as they are becasue the content of pictures are scatty and in no orderly fashion.

Each picture tells story, the travel image on top, showing how i travel each day to uni.

    • The second as i love to travel and see different places.

    • The third as i love to party and go to rave and having a good night out.

    • The final one is a part from every aspect of my uni life.

    Scanned Image.

I have created work that relate to my life, which worked really well in the gallery, but i would like to expand and do something different with the scanners, linking it to portraiture maybe as i want my project to lead off in that direction.

    Week 3:

Our class was separated out into 3 groups which are going to be our groups for the year, 20 students in each.
We then had a slide show on Gilbert and George the artists.
The class discussion was next and we had to put our opinions on what we thought about their work.

After watching the video and discussion the groups rotated and my group then went into the digital suite and we were all shown the computers and scanners.

We were shown by Stephen a website called blurb, that is great for creating albums, books etc. The site also included a system were that you can sell your own book's or images to potential customers through the site.

The last aspect was the scanners, which we were shown through the Apple Mac computers.
We placed previously collected objects onto the scanner and were shown how to scan a picture or objects in the correct way, getting all of the colours exposures correct on the screen.

    Gilbert and George.

Above is a piece of work from Gilbert and George's archive.
I find the work not to my taste as i think that it is offensive and extremely rude.
I do like the orderly fashion of the lines dividing the square individual pictures.
The colours are also a good point drawing in the audience.

Each image that they create takes a lot of preparation and work, the documentary on G&G tells us the thoughts and reasoning behind each of the images.

    Week 2:

Justin Quinell came back and continued with the pinhole camera's and taught us more about how they work and the best ways of using them.

I had a look at a camera obscura because that is the way that light is let into the pinhole and projected onto the photo paper.

    Internet image.

We were set out to take pictures with our pinhole cameras around southampton and see what we could include in our pictures using some sort of theme, mine was portraiture.

After taking our images with the pinhole camera's, the class had an exhibition with all of our work presented how we wanted on the walls or on a stand in the gallery.

    Justin Quinell:
    • Pinhole photographer. his work can be very wierd, but also very clever because of the ideas he has and how well the ppictures come out. i have selected a few of his images because i think that they stood out the most.
    • His vision is very wide and he uses different positioning and angles to create these weird but amazing images.
    My image.

Above is my favourite image, i have it set up with the other 5 pictures i took around Southampton, i tried to keep them as building orientated as possible because of the camber you get with pinhole.

    exhibition.

    Week 1:

A group talk about the project and what sort of things the course involves.
The total students in the class were split up into 14 groups of 5, each given 5 different questions to go out and photograph in different places and of different subjects around southampton.

The group i was put into was given sigange, group, motion, rubbish and reflection.
We set off out round Southampton looking for oppertunities to come up that include our questions.
My image taken on Nikon compact.

Justin Quinell, a pinhole expert came in for the week.
He gave a talk about his work and his apporach to photography.
His images he displayed to the class, were extremely good. which gave us all inspiration and motivation to learnt this technique.

justin showed us how to make our camera's out of a beer can.

My image taken with beer pinhole camera.
My image i took with my beer can really came out well.
The idea behind my picture was to try and create a picture where it shows off some buildings as it relates to the city.
i wanted to capture people in this urban landscape.

    Justin Quinnell.

Justin's work is different, as he takes landscapes, but he does have an element of using sculptures or buildings. The picture above there is a bridge over a river, which works really well with the movement of the sun.
